Fibre is on it’s way

Just did a random check of my exchange and it's saying "AO Accepting Orders which means that the exchange is ready to accept orders from all communications providers for fibre broadband services, such as BT Infinity.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be able to get BT Infinity at your property"

So seems like they are just dangling the carrot at the moment. I've signed up for notification of when it's available. Fell sorry for my mother in law who only lives about 200m from the exchange which means she's more than likely directly cabled to the exchange meaning she doesn't have a street cabinet and thus won't be able to get the FTTC service.

How to root Motorola DROID 4 (XT894) on Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2)

My Droid 4 arrived yesterday from the U.S as an upgrage for my Droid 3. One of the things that annoys me the most about Verizon phones is the shear amount of bloat ware so as per my D3 I decided to root it and set about getting rid of it.

NOTE: I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE/BRICKING OF YOUR PHONE CAUSED BY FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. i CAN NOT GUARANTEE THEY WILL WORK UNDER ALL GIVE SCENARIOS AND CONFIGURATIONS.

1, Download root checker free from play store
2, Run root checker free from apps menu

PIC

4, Downlaod the latest drivers for your phone from here MotorolaDeviceManager
5, Enable USB Debugging on your phone in settings -> Developers option
6, Enable unknown sources in Settings -> Security, this allows root exploit to install a superuser app.
7, Downlaod RAZT BLade explit and extract the folder onto your PC's desktop.
8, Open "rzr_blade" folder and then run the explit by double clickink "run.bat" a dos command window will pop up

PIC

9, Connect your phone to a USB port via a USB cable and follow the onscreen instructions. You will be required to make changes to the "battery saver" memu in the smart actions app.

TP-Link WDR4300 Hacking – Opening The Case

This first post on my guide to hacking the TP-Link WDR-4300 shows you how to open the case.

Start by flipping the unit over so the top is laying face down. In the four corners your will see Philips head screws, start by removing these.

After you've done this flip the unit back over again and have the ports facing you.

Unscrew each antenna from it's lowest part in a clockwise motion.

Each antenna connector is held in by an outer nut, I used a pair of long nose pliers to loosen them half a turn then the rest was easily done by hand.

NOTE: Behind the nut is also a washer which so be careful you don't lose it.

After you have removed all the nuts and washers you simply push each connector in towards the centre of the case and they pop out.

Removing the lid of the router is hard to photograph so i'll try my best to explain. Flipping it back upside down again and looking at it from the bottom you will see a darker black outline that runs all the way round, this bit is actually part of the top of the case which clicks in the the bottom half. The idea is to get something thin enough between the dark black part and the lighter part, a thin flat screwdriver head/finger nails whatever you have handy. Then it's a matter of prying the top section away, I found I had to be quote forceful to get them apart.

After doing that you should hopefully be left with something like this.

New River Island Store Ipswich Bares All

While walking through Ipswich high street I noticed a couple of disgruntled elderly ladies looking at the window of the new river island store shaking there heads and tutting. It appears the cause of their annoyance was due to the unclothed female mannequins donning the entire left of the display.. If only they'd looked in the right window which was full of unclothed male mannequins I bet they would have been smiling then.

Cooking and heating stuff

Looking at ways to heat food and boil water from my camping adventures I already have a Campingaz Bleuet Cv 300 Stove Pz and found it to be sturdy and reliable with the added feature of Instastart ignition saves the hassle of fumbling around for a lighter or matches. They on offer @ Amaon for £12.90 at the moment so might actually pick up another one. However the obvious problem with this and other like it is that they require gas cylinders for fuel the cheapest i’ve found them is £3.99 each @ Halfords.

I also have 2 Campingaz Camp Bistro stoves and while i’ve had no problems with these i’ve had some of the cheaper branded ones and found them very hit and miss whether they’ll actually ignite or even stay lit, also the canister locking mechanism can be rubbish causing it not to seat properly resulting in gas or even flames everywhere.

On a preppers forum I found a link to a Gelert Solid Fuel Stove complete with 24 fuel tablets for £4.59 these have got to be worth it for the tablets alone so will be buying a couple of these and seeing how they fair.

Although more expensive the Esbit 985ml Stove and Cookset seems to come recommended with the added bonus it comes with 2 pots and can run on solid fuel or methylated spirits. I think this option could be well worth considering in the long run.

Being prepared or overreacting?

I have been thinking about 'prepping' for some time and have decided i'm going to make a start on it. While i'm not expecting a Zombie Apocalypse any time soon, with harsher winters approaching and the likelihood of power outages etc I think it's best to be in some way ready for such events.

I've been reading various websites and forums and some people seem to take it to the extreme with Bug out shelters, action plan drills and armoured vehicles I think I will take a more sedate approach. The plan is to store enough food and supplies to enable my family to survive until a more permanent solution can be found.
I don't have a budget to speak of so will add small extras to my weekly shop to stock supplies.
